Nagelsmann not getting carried away over Kahn praise

Julian Nagelsmann insists he is not getting carried away after receiving public praise from Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn regarding his positive start as the club s coach.

Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick in pre-season and has presided over nine wins from 10 matches across all competitions, with Borussia Monchengladbach the only team to avoid defeat to this new Bayern when they drew on matchday one of the 2021-22 Bundesliga campaign.

Bayern have amassed 16 points in their first six league games, their biggest total at this stage of a season since 2016-17 (also 16 points), while only Ottmar Hitzfeld (1998) and Otto Rehhagel (1995, both 18 points) have ever accumulated more from their first six Bundesliga matches with Die Roten.

On top of that, the champions h…

Mourinho would bring glamour to Bayern – Ballack

Jose Mourinho taking over Bayern Munich would bring a certain glamour to the club and the Bundesliga, says Michael Ballack.

Head coach Niko Kovac has endured a difficult first season at the Allianz Arena, with Borussia Dortmund providing Bayern with a much sterner test in the Bundesliga and Liverpool eliminating them from the Champions League last 16.

The Bavarian giants hopes of winning the league for a seventh successive year were boosted by a resounding 5-0 victory over Dortmund on April 6, though executive board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was unwilling to guarantee Kovac s future at the club in the aftermath.

Should Bayern decide to make a new appointment Ballack believes Mourinho, who he played under at Chelsea and has been unemployed since be…

Germany perform best under pressure, Klose claims

Germany legend Miroslav Klose is confident about his nation s chances of overcoming Sweden on Saturday, stating his belief that Joachim Low s side perform best under pressure.

Low s men suffered defeat in their opening match against Mexico and risk becoming the third world champions in a row to exit at the group stages if results on Saturday go against them.

Victory for Sweden against Germany, accompanied by a Mexico win over South Korea earlier in the day, would send Die Mannschaft on an early flight back to Berlin.

Defeat to Mexico prompted criticism of the side, but Klose, the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup with 16 goals, is confident ahead of the match.

We play the best games under pressure. That s why, as far as Saturday is concerned,…

Loftus-Cheek signs five-year Chelsea deal

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has signed a five-year deal to commit his future to Chelsea, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Loftus-Cheek made 24 Premier League appearances in a breakthrough 2018-19 campaign for the Blues, although only six of these were starts.

And new Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has moved quickly to tie the England international down to fresh terms, with the 23-year-old s new deal running until 2024.

Loftus-Cheek will miss the start of the new Premier League season as he is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon that ruled him out of both the Europa League final and Nations League Finals.

But he is thrilled to have confirmed his future will remain at Stamford Bridge.

´Manchester, welcome to ZLATAN´ – Fun poked at City over imminent Ibra deal

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has rarely been associated with humility, and that appears unlikely to change as he makes the move to Manchester United.

Ibrahimovic announced on Thursday that Old Trafford will be the next destination in a glittering career that has seen him win titles in four different European leagues.

The news, while yet to be confirmed by United, was followed by the impending arrival of the Swede being visibly publicised in Manchester, via a means that poked fun at neighbours City.

When Carlos Tevez made the move from United to City in 2009, the blue half of Manchester made sure to enjoy the moment, unveiling a poster of Tevez celebrating with the caption Welcome to Manchester in the Deansgate area of the city just over two miles from Old Trafford.

Heaton: I got the Ferguson hairdryder treatment for leaving Man Utd!

Tom Heaton says leaving Manchester United was the best decision he has made in his career, even though he suffered the Alex Ferguson hairdryer treatment as a result.

The Burnley goalkeeper was United s number three when they won the Champions League in 2008, but opted not to renew his contract at Old Trafford, subsequently going on a further four loan spells before ultimately leaving permanently in 2010.

Ferguson was unhappy with Heaton when the shot stopper broke the news, but he does not regret his choice after spells at Cardiff City and Bristol City eventually led to his impressive rise with Burnley, which has earned him England international recognition.

I can understand it from his point of view, Heaton told Sky Sports of his dressing down from Ferguson. <…

Rangers to sign McAuley

Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed the club expect to complete the signing of Gareth McAuley in the next few days, according to multiple sources.

The experienced defender is now a free agent following the cancellation of his contract with West Bromwich Albion after the Baggies suffered relegation to the Championship this summer. Gerrard is keen on adding the 38-year-old to his ranks with a season-long deal in place, but he says there s no hurry and adds that McAuley will be their last signing for now.

McAuley started his career with Lincoln City in League Two where he spent two years before moving to Leicester City in 2006, then playing in the Championship. After another two seasons he left Leicester for Ipswich Town, and eventually settled at West Brom…

Ludogorets 2 Arsenal 3: Ozil completes stunning comeback to clinch qualification

Arsenal fought back from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 away at Ludogorets courtesy of Mesut Ozil s 87th-minute effort and secure a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League for a 17th successive season.

The Premier League side made heavy weather of securing victory in Sofia against opponents they had crushed 6-0 at the Emirates Stadium less than a fortnight ago, a game in which Ozil netted a hat-trick.

Still, the positive result sees them through to the last 16 from Group A and the late winner means Arsene Wenger s men are top ahead of Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference, with the two teams going head-to-head at the Emirates on November 23.

Jonathan Cafu put the hosts who had scored 13 goals in three games since the heavy loss in the E…

France 0-1 Croatia: Modric penalty puts Nations League finals beyond reach of defending champions

France can no longer successfully defend their Nations League crown after Monday s 1-0 home defeat to Croatia left the finals beyond their reach.

Didier Deschamps side had flattered to deceive in their first three matches this month, losing once and drawing the other two, and they were no better against a stubborn Croatia at the Stade de France.

They proved to be their own worst enemy with a needless early penalty concession that Luka Modric took full advantage of five minutes in.

The hosts performance was full of bluster but lacked subtlety, with clear-cut chances difficult to come by on another disappointing day for the reigning world champions.

Ibrahima Konate was the guilty party for the penalty as the Liverpool defender clumsily tripped Ante Budimir …

England keep Olympic hopes alive with dramatic comeback win over Netherlands

England kept their bid to secure Olympics qualification for Great Britain alive in dramatic fashion as Ella Toone’s stoppage-time goal completed a fightback from two goals down to beat the Netherlands 3-2 at Wembley.

Needing a win to remain in contention to finish top in Nations League Group A1, the final position required for them to have a chance of obtaining a place for GB at next summer’s Games in Paris, the Lionesses were on course for a third defeat in the pool as Lineth Beerensteyn notched a first-half brace for the Dutch.

But Sarina Wiegman’s side battled back with two goals in quick succession from Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp around the hour mark, before substitute Toone capped the turnaround in the first minute of time added on to bring a huge roar fr…
