Gasperini: Desire was decisive

Gian Piero Gasperini claims Genoa were rewarded for their desire to win as they beat his former club Inter 1-0 in Serie A on Sunday.

A late Luca Antonelli header was enough to seal victory for the hosts at a rain-soaked Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris their first triumph over Inter since 1994.

And coach Gasperini, who was in charge at Inter for just a few months in 2011, hailed the spirit and commitment of his team.

It was a good game in tough conditions, as there was so much water, he told Sky Sport Italia following his first victory against his former employers.

Inter are a physical side, but Genoa really did well and played with intensity, and this victory means a lot to us.

Without doubt the stadium and these fans help the team and give us something mor…

Christopher Schindler has committed his long-term future to Huddersfield Town on the eve of the new Premier League season, as head coach David Wagner once again targets survival for his side.

Huddersfield – who finished 16th in their maiden Premier League campaign in 2017-18 open the new term at home to Chelsea on Saturday.

Ahead of welcoming the Blues, Wagner s men have been boosted by the club s reigning player of the year Schindler signing a new three-year deal that also includes an option for a further 12 months.

We re absolutely delighted that he has signed this new contract at the club; it’s as good as any news or incoming that we had success with during the summer transfer window, Wagner told Huddersfield s website.

As well as being a su…

Mourinho: I don´t like this United team

Jose Mourinho blasted Manchester United s performance in their 2-0 defeat at West Ham and said he sees no improvement in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s side since last season.

Goals in either half from Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Cresswell condemned United to their second Premier League defeat in six matches and it was the lacklustre performance at London Stadium that drew criticism from Mourinho.

While admitting that the side he managed in the early part of 2018-19 before Solskjaer replaced him were bad , Mourinho said they looked no better than the one that recorded a disappointing sixth-place Premier League finish last team, despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James all arriving at Old Trafford in the close season.

Asked on Sky Sports whether he could…

Mihajlovic appointed Fiorentina coach

Serb Sinisa Mihajlovic has been appointed coach of Serie A club Fiorentina in place of Cesare Prandelli, who takes over the Italian national side after the World Cup, the Tuscany club confirmed Friday.

Mihajlovic, 41, coached Catania last season helping them stay in the Serie A where they finished 13th.

The former Serbian international defender played for Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter Milan, and was previously deputy coach to Roberto Mancini at Inter Milan from 2006-2008.

In November 2008 he took over at struggling Bologna but was sacked after just over five months because of poor results.

Mauricio Pochettino feels music can have a positive impact on Chelsea’s season

Mauricio Pochettino believes “music can change everything” after Chelsea fans inspired his team’s 3-1 comeback win at Crystal Palace on Monday with a chorus of Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’.

The second half at Selhurst Park was delayed when referee Michael Oliver’s radio equipment failed, during which time the stadium PA system belted out the 1977 hit.

And away supporters kept the song’s famous refrain “don’t worry about a thing, because every little thing is gonna be alright” going when the game resumed.

Within minutes their prophecy was realised when Conor Gallagher slammed Malo Gusto’s low cross into the top corner to equalise Jefferson Lerma’s first-half strike for Palace.

Afterwards Gallagher, who went on to net the game…

Atletico Madrid 1 Levante 0: Marino blunder sends Simeone´s men top

Atletico Madrid went two points clear at the top of La Liga as a blunder from Levante goalkeeper Diego Marino gave Diego Simeone s side a 1-0 win on Saturday.

Defending champions Barcelona s 0-0 draw at Espanyol earlier in the day afforded Atletico the chance to gain a slender lead at the summit.

Fortune was not on Atletico s side for much of the encounter despite the capital city club dominating at the Vicente Calderon.

The hosts struck the crossbar three times, while striker Jackson Martinez squandered a host of opportunities to break the deadlock.

Martinez was withdrawn in the 73rd minute and it was his replacement Thomas who made the crucial impact nine minutes from time.

The 22-year-old s tame effort somehow slipped under the arm of Marino to…

Manchester United v Sheffield United: Herrera desperate to avoid another upset

Ander Herrera is relishing the return of the FA Cup and hopes to see Manchester United make a winning start against Sheffield United on Saturday.

United have not lifted the trophy since 2004 and were knocked out by eventual winners Arsenal at Old Trafford at the quarter-final stage last season.

Herrera enjoyed what proved to be a short-lived stint in the competition last term and is eagerly awaiting the chance to go further in 2015-16, as United look to end a silverware drought stretching back to 2013.

We didn t go too far in the last FA Cup but I enjoyed the games a lot, Herrera told MUTV.

It s a great competition and the organisation in England is fantastic, I have to say. Now we start at home and it would be good to win. It s a very enjoyable comp…

Football was Silva´s ´escape´ after son´s premature birth

Manchester City s David Silva used football as an escape last season while juggling his professional life with the premature birth of his son Mateo.

The Spain star spent much of 2017-18 travelling to and from his homeland, as Mateo spent the first five months of his life in hospital.

Despite that tough period, Silva still played a pivotal role in City s record-breaking Premier League title win and EFL Cup triumph and showed off his son to the Etihad Stadium crowd in last month s 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield Town.

It was really difficult, he said to BBC Sport. It was so tough, him being in hospital for so long. Besides, he was in Spain, meaning I had to travel a lot and could hardly train.

I didn t sleep much, I wasn t eating well, but luckily the team …

Klopp bemused by Neville´s Champions League advice

Jurgen Klopp has been left bemused by Gary Neville s suggestion that Liverpool should forget this season s Champions League in order to mount a serious domestic title challenge.

The Reds have started the 2018-19 campaign in impressive fashion, winning their opening four Premier League games while conceding only one goal.

Neville said in an interview with The Times that Liverpool would have a better chance of winning a first top-flight title since 1990 if they did not have European commitments in the final few months of the season.

But Klopp, whose side reached the final of the competition in 2017-18, does not understand the former Manchester United captain s reasoning.

How should that work? We don t play Champions League, or what? he told a news confe…

Pep Guardiola hails Manchester City ‘supermen’ after closing gap to Liverpool

Pep Guardiola hailed his Manchester City “supermen” after they closed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to one point with an unconvincing 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

The champions had to contend with local fireworks, a misfiring Erling Haaland and a second-half onslaught from the hosts before they left the south coast with a 15th victory from their last 17 matches.

Phil Foden’s first-half tap-in proved enough for City, who took advantage of Liverpool being in Carabao Cup final action this weekend, but were again not at their fluent best after a narrow 1-0 win over Brentford in midweek.

“They are supermen,” Guardiola insisted.

“What can I say? The demands for the calendar, for everything, for the expectations, they are so high. What they …
